Russian Riot Police beat demonstrators
I discovered this article on Boston.com, it was written by Peter Finn of the Washington Post. His article: Russian Riot Police Beat Demonstrators, Dozens Arrested During Clashes was an report on a march in Russia. His article references the marches here in the US, and the Russian government's effort to quiet anti-government sentiments.
The article gives a lot of detail on the anti-government groups and beliefs that led up to the incident over the weekend. Also, the article states that Putin enjoys overwhelming support in Russian. It seemed to be objective, but I am not sure it tells the entire story. I think he could have oversimplified the motivations behind the march.

It does seem that the reasons/meaning behind the march have been oversimplified. I think Russia's history needs to be taken into consideration, since for a long time it was subject to rule not unlike that of Vladimir Putin (currently on a milder basis, however). I would argue that more than a few protest groups are dissatisified with Putin's retraction of a number of the civil liberties and freedoms the Russian people gained under Gorbachev. I also wonder under what terms Putin enjoys his popularity...like the forced popularity that Castro has enjoyed for so long?
Michelle,
You make excellent points here. I am inclined to agree with you and suspect that you raise the very question that I was asking myself about the statement within the article referring to Putin's popularity. This particular article highlighted the issue from our readings that journalists are not equipped to read distant contexts and bring closed interpretations.
I would also have to agree with michelle on this one. You do make a great agrument for the blogg that was written. I believe that government struggle has been going on for years. Trying to support a country that has been horribly supported for so many years makes it hard for Russia to get back to normal.
