Women In Public Relations

After the readings this week, including the Thomas article and the Focus on Diversity report, I was surprised to find that women are not equally represented in positions of high level management, particularly in Public Relations. My observations from my PR classes have been that women outnumber men, and the PRSSA (student organization for PR at SSC) is comprised of, almost exclusively, women. Also, guest speakers to my PR course last semester, and guest speakers at PRSA, have been mostly women. My impression as a student has led me to believe that women outrank men in this field. Does this surprise anyone else?

Underrepresentation of women in the PR field does actually suprise me too. Last semester was the first time I realized that most of my communications classes were disproportionately female. Also, while researching non-profit organizations for a class assignment, I found many of the development directors, who deal with pr were mainly women. Thus I shared your belief that women outnumbered men in the field.

Michelle,

You were in my intro to PR class last semester, didn't it seem like the guest speakers were mostly female as well? I remember two men - one from the Salem Newspaper, so he was from the journalism field, and maybe one from PR field. It seemed to me that we had several women PR practioners. It is surprising to me that women do not hold management positions in this field.

This the classic glass ceiling. There are a lot of practitioners who are women, but not as many higher up.
