Ninendo Wii

I looked at Nintendo. They have a list of options for selecting different languages, and international website locations including Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, Japan, etc. They do not simply translate the web content into another language, each link is a portal to a new window with it's own unique page design.

The images and pictures are strictly game and equipment based, there is minimal reflection of racial diversity. It certainly serves the purpose of the campaign, the launching of Wii.

Nintendo's response to diversity in their audience is to offer a wide range of offerings for different languages.

Coca-Cola.Com

The Coca-Cola company is a world wide company. They want all their customers to understand what they are about. I went on their website and found a link to the Coke Show. This is a web based video contest that ensures a prize to the winner. Coke wants you to get involved with their product. Not only do they want you to drink it, they are also willing to dish out money to anyone who can come up with a good idea for their next commercial. Below is a link to their website and who knows maybe if anyone from this class post a movie and wins you'll let me in on a lil bit of the profits hahaha

Minute Maid on the Web

I looked at the Minute Maid brand website, actually a Coca-Cola company. The juice company does aim to appeal to its audience's cultural diversity on its webpage. There is an option for spanish-speaking viewers to see the entire site in spanish. Also, you can view Minute Maid's newest advertisements on the site. The commercials try to express diversity by showing people of different nationalities. Also, in the "In Spanish" section, the same commercials can be seen with the audio in spanish. Other than that, there is really not much more they could do, as most of the site is made up of images of fruit and Minute Maid juice! As a part of such a large company, (Coca-Cola) with a market that spans the globe, it is not surprising that its smaller counterparts employ some degree of cultural diversity in its communications. You can check out the site at http://www.minutemaid.com

Jogadores X Ninjas (Nike)

I found this commercial under sports on you tube. Its a Nike commercial from New Zealand that is influenced by soccer aka futbol. It consists of soccer players battle against a Chinese army. I enjoy this commercial cause it reminds me of a lot of things. For example the battle of good and evil, the movie mortal combat because of the sounds and music, and also how Nike always can display a positive sign in each commercial in any part of the world. Attached below is a link to the commercial I found on you tube..

Something Orange Obox

I watched a commercial on YouTube.com for something orange obox? I really was not sure what they were advertising but I thought the commercial was funny. It was a guy a girl mocking eachother on a subway. Everyone starts staring at them as they flirt. One thing I found interesting about it was that the song playing in the backround a famous American song called Rockstar and it was in English, however, at the end of the commercial the ad was written in another language and the voice-over man spoke in the language. I can not think of many commercials that I have seen in America that have songs in another language playing?

I found a funny Japanese/Thai Green Tea Commercial.
It is actually very cute, with a father and son caterpillar making their way to the top of a branch in search of the top leaf.
One thing struck me as a little unusual, the father caterpillar smacks the son, you can actually hear a 'slap!' in the audio. Of course, if this one moment were aired in the US, the commercial would be pulled in an instant.
It is still very cute, though. The son caterpillar tries to hypnotise a man who has plucked the top leaf of the branch.
The commerical has subtitles in English.

WWF Ad in Canada

I found a commercial from the World Wildlife Federation that airs in Canada on YouTube. The "It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" song that used to be on the Mr. Rogers show is playing in the background and different natural disaster-type situations are occuring. During a particularly destructive storm, there is someone driving a convertible with the top down and a couple is walking in the middle of it with a baby in a carriage. People are also seen camping in the woods which are being burned down by brush fires. Then "Ignoring global warming won't make it go away." appears on the screen. I thought the commercial powerfully conveyed its point. The commercial relied mainly on images and sound with only a little text to get its message across-- I can see this as an effective advertisement and I could also see this commercial airing in the United States.

Support Group for Black Women

I found a website for The Black Womens Support Group based in Cambridge, MA but works to promote and maintain the welfare of black women in Cambridge and surrounding communities. The group is run by local black women and is affiliated with Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum. Members attend meetings and receive newsletters outlining pertinent topics and a monthly calendar of events. The group offers advice, community outreach for disenfranchised families, employment help, education, counseling and case work services, and workshops on everything from cooking to HIV awareness. The website, also has a section highlighting black heroines throughout history. Checking out this website, it's amazing what a group of ordinary people can accomplish in terms of social services and support.

Muslim American Society

After reading so much in this week's assigned readings about discrimination against Muslims, I thought it would be interesting to search for some websites regarding this issue. I came across the website called the Muslim American Society. It is a very interesting site that includes that history of the Islamic and Muslim culture and also gives news updates. The site is a good place for Muslim-Americans to voice their opinions and feel apart of the on-going effort to put an end to the stereo-type that all Middle-Eastern people are the bad guys.

Kid Power - Website for Children with Disabilities

Please check out this web page:
http://www.kid-power.org/

It is an online support group for children (and their families) with disabilities.
I read about Kyle, a young boy with cereral palsy. His mother has posted stories about Kyle, and a comprehensive list of his therapies and doctors visits. There is a picture of Kyle playing soccer on his story page.

The webpage provides information on a spectrum of disabilites affecting children. It also has supportive information for families of children with disabilities. As with Kyle's mother, when a child is diagnosed with a disability, families have a need to inform themselves and look for a community of support.
